Sinn Spezialuhren celebrate its 50th Anniversary (1961-2011)

Sinn Spezialuhren zu Frankfurt am Main is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011. In the past five decades the company has grown to become a nationally and internationally renowned manufacturer of high-quality mechanical watches. Helmut Sinn, an instructor for blind flight and former World War II pilot, founded the company "Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren" in 1961. Originally, the company concentrated exclusively on navigation clocks and pilot chronographs. From the very outset Sinn Spezialuhren relied on direct sales and eschewed extensive advertising campaigns. In a relatively short time, the company became an insider's tip within the industry – thanks primarily to word-of-mouth advertising. SINN entered a new era in terms of technology, innovation and strategy when engineer Lothar Schmidt took over the company in 1994. Today, the name SINN stands for highly functional mechanical watches valued by pilots, divers and the elite GSG 9 special forces unit – as well as by "normal" customers. Thanks to numerous technologies developed by Lothar Schmidt, including DIAPAL, HYDRO, TEGIMENT-Technology and Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, SINN watches prove again and again that they are sturdy and robust even under extreme conditions. Their quality and precision also make them suitable for everyday use. The development and design of SINN watches are consistent with the functionality demanded of them. If you would like to learn more, you will find the highlights of the company's 50-year history in the current anniversary catalogue. Please click here for more highlights.

SINN watches on rough road simulation track

Have you ever wondered how our watches would react to huge jolts and vibrations? Can they truly withstand the impact as they all claim?

Well, Sinn has the answer to this. In order to demonstrate how their watches would react to shocks, they contacted the internationally-recognised Fauenhofer-Institut LBF of over 70 years in experience, to put their watches to the test. They conducted a no mean-feat endurance test on 5 different Sinn models where the watches are fastened onto the steering wheel of a test chassis on a simulated rough road track.

The classic watches such as the Frankfurt Finance (model 6000) are deliberately chosen in this test to showcase the hardiness of the watches. Despite the enormous stress levels to which the Sinn watches were subjected, they all passed with flying colors; proving their robustness and suitability for everyday use, even when exposed to extreme vibration and jolts.

The next time you look at your Sinn piece sitting at your wrist, you know that it’s a tough cookie.

Read about the full scope and extent of the endurance test. Please click on the pages below.
